About This Project
Sweet Shop is an art installation celebrating books, reading, and public libraries. Growing up in Oakland, California, I looked forward to my weekly weekend bike ride over to my branch library to check out books for the week. On the way back I’d stop for candy at The Dime and Dollar store, and the two are forever linked. But a book IS like a piece of candy! This work acknowledges the many treasures and connections to be found in the library. A new dad checks out a cookbook with easy weeknight recipes, middle schoolers are playing Magic in the community room, a toddler is enjoying Story Time, elders are catching up with each other, and people are sitting around learning needlecraft. It’s all happening at the library and everybody is here.
