About This Project
Chemise Binding, which is the precursor to the book jacket, serves as the long view.
The covers with spine reference an open book.
Printer’s Ornament moves inside to the page. The text is made of objects found on a daily walk. This detritus creates lines and paragraphs of text.
Illuminated Letters and Anonymous Signature brings our focus to the decorative elements. Originally, scribes used ornate lettering and precious materials to make manuscripts even more beautiful, as it was thought they would be more worthy of carrying religious messages.
The book form itself becomes a point of departure for acknowledging the power of the written word to inspire and enlighten as well as to incite hate and violence. Over the centuries and across cultures, books have been treasured, revered, banned and burned for their content.
